Lovebird Aviary ( Ultimate Guide)
Last Updated on July 8, 2022 by Ali Shahid
Feathered friends like lovebirds deserve to live in a home that is just as lively and entertaining as they are. Lovebird Aviary is considered one of the best housing. The possibilities are endless when it comes to experimenting.
Due to lovebirds’ social, curiosity, and playfulness, lovebird aviaries should also be built in this way. Ideally, the space should be large, there should be perches, toys, climbing ladders, and a lot of other stuff too.
If you want your birds to remain happy and healthy in your home, you need to provide them with an aviary that is safe, clean, and fulfills their curious nature.
What is an aviary?
A bird cage or aviary is a structure that is used for the care and confinement of captive birds, which is usually large enough to accommodate the aviculturist.
The size of aviaries can vary from small enclosures measuring only a foot or two on a side to large flight cages measuring 30 meters (100 feet) or longer and as much as 15 meters high.
Rails and pheasants are often enclosed in one-meter enclosures because they fly less or weakly. Birds often have their room or porch in the private aviary.
Depending on the type of bird being maintained, aviaries in cold climates are generally enclosed and heated, although occasionally the birds are simply driven into a smaller enclosure at night.
Because many birds tend to injure themselves while flying against glass, the sides of the enclosure are usually made of wire, and sometimes the roof is also made of wire in the enclosure.
The majority of aviculturists prefer to place their birds in natural environments with plants around them. The density and type of birds are critical factors in choosing plants compatible with captive birds.
Arboreal birds can destroy plants by breaking them with their weight, and others can destroy them by chewing their leaves off. Perches can prevent droppings from impinging on leaves, which can ruin most plants.
Many private aviaries are located in zoos or research institutions, while others are maintained for pleasure or as parts of exhibits.
Why Lovebirds are Best Fits for Aviaries
There is no question that the lovebird is one of the most popular bird breeds and one of the most attractive as well. This bird has charmed people throughout history and continues to do so today.
If the weather turns bad, these colorful, gentle birds will need aviaries that offer plenty of shelter and warmth. Lovebirds are intelligent and affectionate despite their dislike of the cold.
If their owners enter the aviary, they climb all over their owners and are often described as having the bold character of parrots.
Different Materials for lovebirds’ Aviaries
Wooden or Bamboo Aviaries
Many beautiful and natural aviaries made from wood or bamboo can be found on the market today. Oftentimes, if they are not painted or stained, these cages will not cause any harm to the birds.
In this situation, there is a drawback because lovebirds are known to gnaw on the bars of these enclosures, which can allow them to escape the cage. It is also difficult to clean bamboo or wood effectively since urine and feces are able to penetrate the material and stain and smell.
Metal Aviaries
It is generally recommended that you use metal aviaries for lovebirds, however, there are some precautions that you should take when choosing a metal cage for your lovebird. You should avoid cages with any type of paint or coating.
Lovebirds will likely pick at the bars as they are busy and may ingest toxic materials as a result.
Choosing a cage for an aviary should be based on its unpainted nature and preferably made from raw iron or steel that is not painted. To prevent the cage from rusting, make sure to keep it dry and clean.
Aluminum aviaries
There are a variety of shapes and sizes available in aluminum aviaries, which are lightweight, strong, and rust-resistant at the same time. As a corrosion-resistant, fireproof, and easy-to-clean material, this material won’t cause any harm to birds.
PVC Aviary
Besides being lightweight and resistant to rot, PVC is also temperature-proof and weatherproof. Even though PVC is a cost-effective option, it does require a bit more maintenance than metal.
Important Factors to Consider When Building or Buying a Lovebird Aviary
In aviaries, birds can fly around in an outdoor environment. For larger species and/or a large number of birds, an aviary is a better choice than a cage. If you want to keep one lovebird, you should have an aviary that measures at least 30 by 30 by 18 inches.
Look for cages that are marked as suitable for cockatiels if you intend to have a pair. As a general rule, two lovebirds can be comfortably housed in a birdcage of this size.
There is no such thing as too big of a cage, so choose the largest aviary you can afford and that you have the space for in your home to house. The bars of the cage must be horizontal to facilitate climbing on the bars by the lovebirds.
Ideally, the cage bars should be at least three-fourths of an inch apart to prevent your birds from escaping. In any case, you will be able to keep your birds happier when they have a larger aviary.
Usually made from aluminum, wood, or PVC, aviaries are available in both indoor and outdoor versions, and are equipped with solid mesh or carefully spaced bars.
You can also find them with wheels. Despite this, be sure your bird has enough space to fly even if you use a portable model.
Practical considerations are also important. The ideal state of affairs would be if all components could be easily removed and cleaned. The aviary is equipped with a removable tray at the base that makes it easy for you to clean the droppings out.
It is also possible to feed your birds with a pull-out food tray without having to get out of the aviary while you are feeding them.
Several accessories are required for a successful bird aviary, such as perches (or heated perches! ), bird feeders, water dispensers, swings, ladders, mirrors, and various other objects. The lovebirds are often destructive and busy.
Don’t use painted or plastic toys, and make sure they are sturdy and nontoxic. To prevent your lovebirds from ingesting any hazardous materials, make sure that you remove any accessories that have been damaged.
Keep an eye on them while they are outside their cages, too, as lovebirds are often on the lookout for mischief when they are outside.

Hi, which living potted trees can be used in my lovebirds cage or indoors for them to play, eat, and nibble on? I read about orange trees, but isn’t that to acidic for them? I’m specifically looking for a living tree, do not mind the tree not growing fruits. Just need to be safe for them. I have 4 little monsters 🙂
Thanks xx
Apple and Almond will be safe options to use.
